An Amazing Fact: Did you know that simple
math can help determine the approximate age of the earth? All you need to do is
study humanity’s global population. There are about 8 billion people on the
planet today. Because our population doubles globally approximately every 150
years—a very conservative estimate that accounts for plagues and wars—interestingly,
today’s numbers make sense if the earth is only about 6,000 years old. If humans
have existed for 50,000 or more years, there would be multiple trillions of
people on the planet!
Dara was
struggling in biology class at her public high school, where she was being
taught that the theory of evolution was a scientific fact. Where could she turn

For many
in our world, evolution is an open-and-shut case. Scientists have supposedly proven
that it took eons for microbes to evolve into humans. But not everybody,

believe the Bible record, but how can we reach those who have been taught to

Everything Begins in Genesis
Our
worldview, the framework through which we understand the world, shapes our values,
actions, attitudes, and the direction of our lives. Whether we believe that we
evolved out of a primordial blob or that we were designed by a loving Creator,
it impacts how we value—or don’t value—human life.
The Bible
plainly teaches, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”
(Genesis 1:1). The name of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, means
“beginnings.” It lays the foundation for a worldview that gives us clear guidance
on multiple issues, like humanity’s identity as made in God’s image, the two distinct
genders, marriage, freedom of choice, the sacredness of the Sabbath. Genesis
also explains the fall of humans into sin and rebellion against their Creator.
There are
so many foundational truths in Genesis that help us properly understand our
world, our purpose, our history, and God’s plan to rescue us from sin. Genesis
gives us a solid place upon which to stand in a world with shifting, meaningless
answers that leave people confused and asking, “What’s the meaning of life?”
Destroying the Foundations
It is Satan
who is behind all the confusion, working feverishly to destroy the foundational
truths of Genesis.
The Bible
explains, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
(Psalm 11:3). These foundational truths are under direct attack whenever
evolution is taught. That’s why Scripture warns us not to “forget the Lord your Maker, who stretched out the
heavens and laid the foundations of the earth” (Isaiah 51:13). We see everywhere
the results of a world without an understanding of Genesis, with distorted
views about our origins.
Should we
be surprised to see what happens when the foundations are destroyed: murder,
racism, genocides, wars, abortions, violence, hatred, hopelessness, and death?
Reaching Hearts
I have
watched creation vs. evolution debates during which sarcasm and ridicule flew
back and forth between both groups. This dishonors our Lord. Neither do I
believe that it helps to tell secular people that the Creation happened merely because
the Bible says so.
There are
Christlike ways to reach non-Christians, atheists, and those who may believe
that the science has been settled. Many scientists have provided solid evidence
and sound reasons—as Dara learned—for believing that a Creator made our world. We
must present to such people on a logical and scientific level the amazing
wonders of Creation that could never have happened by chance, that could never have
happened without an intelligent Creator!
Multiple
branches of science—paleontology, biology, cosmology, and anthropology, to name
a few—provide strong evidence to support the biblical view of Creation. For
instance, paleontologists have been finding an abundance of well-preserved
biological materials in rock layers dated millions of years old. One team
uncovered flexible connective tissue in the femur of a fossilized Tyrannosaurus
rex. But since biological materials can last only about a thousand years and dinosaurs
supposedly lived more than 65 million years ago—well, something doesn’t add up!
