Do we really need to go to church?

Pastor Doug Batchelor

Q. If a person accepts Jesus, do they need to attend church to be saved?

A. First, it’s important to note that there will be many people in heaven who were not affiliated with any particular church or denomination—or for some reason could not attend church regularly. But one of the foremost principles of Christianity is that we are saved into the body of Christ, which is another name for the church (Ephesians 1:22, 23). In Acts 2, the Bible says, “The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” When you are baptized, you become part of Christ’s body and enter into the church (1 Corinthians 12:20).

Perhaps we should also ask this question in another way: Why would a person say he or she loves God but doesn’t wish to fellowship with His people? One of the reasons God wants us in church is because it has people with similar beliefs. It helps bolster our faith and makes us accountable to one another. Even in churches where there are some difficult people, it is the best environment to increase our capacity to learn to love one another.

A person saying, “I believe in God and want to be baptized, but I don’t want to go to church,” sounds to me like a man saying to his bride, “I love you; I want to marry you—but I don’t want to live with you.” It’s saying you want the benefits of marriage but not the relationship that goes with it. Part of the Christian experience is having a relationship with a fellowship of believers.

When someone lives as a hermit from society, he or she tends to become eccentric. Isolating oneself from others begins to affect the mind; the brain atrophies. You become socially inept. (Take it from a recovering hermit.) In the same way, it’s important for Christians to be social with fellow believers in corporate worship and gatherings to avoid becoming spiritually eccentric and inept. Church is part of God’s gift, so Christians should do their very best to find a biblical church in which they can grow into mature members of God’s family. See also 1 Corinthians 12:12–14.

In John 13:35 Jesus says, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” He knew that the love and unity of the church could be a powerful part of our witness to the world in the last days. Conversely, the devil surely realizes that the world would disbelieve by our division. He has been working toward that goal since the beginning.

Think of the devil as a wolf stalking a lamb. He knows that as long as the lamb is with the flock or close to the shepherd, the lamb is safe. But if the wolf can chase and scatter the flock from the shepherd and from one another, he can easily bring down a lamb that has strayed. The devil wants to separate from the flock the lambs (baby Christians who are more vulnerable) so he can destroy them.

As it says in Hebrews 10:25, we need to be firmly committed to corporate worship and assembly-especially “so much more, as ye see the day approaching.” Do you see the day of the Lord approaching?

I attend church every Sunday. I also attend various extra services or events, but at this church it seems there’s something constantly going on. Every week there’s an extra prayer meeting, an extra service, an outreach, a serve day, and on and on. There are “Freedom” meetings once a week in members homes, and it’s expected of every member to attend the group of their choice. At the end of the “Freedom” series, there’s a conference. I love this church and the people. But honestly, it’s almost exhausting, and I don’t even go to everything. The pastor says from the pulpit that we shouldn’t miss anything and we won’t grow if we do miss. Activity doesn’t make a Christian grow. Intimacy with God does. It doesn’t mean I don’t like to serve because I do. But I remember what the Bible says about Martha and Mary. I’ve begun to notice a different attitude from the pastor every week depending on if I attended a certain meeting of outreach, or not. It’s like he’s keeping tabs. If I miss, he’s a little more reserved. If I made it to everything that previous week he’s as friendly as can be on Sunday. I love my pastor but I really think he’s micromanaging the church. No one wants to talk about it for fear they’ll be labeled troublemakers or divisive. It’s almost impossible to win bringing even legitimate concerns to a pastor. Once you do you’ll be labeled because the pastor usually has the board and other staff behind him, no matter what.

My son is 3 years old, and I was thinking of bringing him to church this Sunday. It's good that you mentioned how Christians can grow into mature members of God's family when they find a biblical church to follow. I'll be sure to choose a good church service that is friendly to kids.

The church will save us if we remain faithfully in it, l mean faithfully. The church will not save you if you are are not faithful to its teachings and doctrines.

Can you please share your thoughts.
It came up when we were having bible study

Some believe that there are non SDAs who will be saved, some believe if you're not part of the congregation you won't be saved

I'd challenge the idea that not wanting to go to church is like saying to a bride "I love you; I want to marry you - but I don't want to live with you." A man marries a woman because he knows her, loves her, has dated her, and knows its reciprocal. We become part of the church because of Jesus and we love following Jesus. And we enjoy being around people who have been with Jesus. That kind of attraction is not manufactured. It's the work of the Spirit. The institution of the church however is different. There are plenty of people in church buildings who just don't leave you feeling like you've been with someone who's been walking with Jesus. And if you're honest about it, you know exactly what I mean. Likewise when we're not walking with Jesus it cuts the other way. People don't enjoy being around us. I think it has to do with one basic premise of this piece and that's the notion of "attending church". We don't attend church. We attend the meeting of the church. The meeting of those who have been called out of the world and into fellowship with him. We can manufacture fellowship by religious affiliatio and call it church. We can confuse it with institutional loyalty and call it church. But we can do all those things without Jesus. That's just religious activity. It is typical to lay the responsibility at the feet of the individual Christian for not wanting to attend. But if we really are spending time walking with Jesus, we'll become the kind of people others want to be around. Not because of us, but by the work of His Spirit in us. The question is, are we?

The reason why YOU need to go to church, is "when we get to heaven that is what we will be doing every SABBATH (7th day of the week "saturday") is to go and worship GOD in the "biggest church ever build" the NEW JERUSALEM ..Isaiah 66:23 (read it)...(READ REVELATION 21:15-25...verse 25 "It's GATES shall not be shut at all by day ( and there shall be NO NIGHT there)...may God help you dig deeper in understanding HIS WORD!

You missed the point man! Look at it this way, the parable about the "Wheat and the Tares" in Mat 13:25...(read it) It is a parable for us to understand that "Jesus doesn't want us to kick out the sinners and purify our worlship with HIM...He wants the "unrepentant worshiping with the god's people together" so they can "TEST GOD'S PEOPLE with "trials and burdens" to see if they "REALLY ARE CONVERTED" ...And YOU will NOT HAVE these "test of faith" if you "JUST STAYED and Prayed with Chirstians believers"...

Christians do not need church, church/religion is of man and we're not to have man teach us (1 John 2:27)...Sunday worship is pagan to the core...the word contains 'Sun' for a reason...sun worship was a very common form of idolatry among pagans...and paganism has infiltrated the whole church system (all denominations)...most religious people are quite uptight.

I respectfully disagree that we, as Christians, do not need church.
It's true that the idea of RELIGION is from man (sectarianism, etc.), but it's not true of the church, necessarily. The church, or, if you like, the Body of Christ, is made up of people, with Christ in the center of it all. And we all know (I'm assuming) that when we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we want to get to know Christ better, and live with him for eternity.
Ways we can get to know him are by talking to God, pray to him, and read the Bible, but we also need to love and get to know others. In the beginning, we were created for relationships with God and with our fellow human beings. I think all of us would agree on that point. Jesus said,
“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’"-Matthew 22:37-39 NKJV
Neighbors, as in, other people. ALL people. However they act. I don't mean we go up to complete strangers and telling them that you love them and that God loves them. And I don't mean we shouldn't do that, either. What I mean is that we should treat others in the way Jesus would treat them. This is the same way with the church! When you've been through hard times, can't you rely on God, your friends, your family, and especially your CHURCH family, to help you through? Wouldn't you do the same for them, if you loved them and cared about them so much?
We go to church because we have others who have a relationship with Christ, and share the same beliefs. We go to church because we are supported by other believers. We go to church, because we can learn from other people because God can talk to us, through his people, a.k.a the church! From church, we can learn from people outside our circles. We can learn that God is real, from their struggles, their fights, their torments, and their temptations, because God helped them through it! We can learn more about God, his power, his grace, and his love, because God enables men and women with the power to spread his gospel. I'm not saying we should neglect direct communication with God, and to put our Bibles away, to listen to the pastor. I say the direct opposite! We can discover truths of God we never realised before, through fellowship with fellow believers and pastors, and compare it with the Bible, to really check if it's sound. They go hand in hand!
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."- 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Bible says that the early church...stop right there. Did I say, "the early study group"? No, it specifically says church. I am not saying that we should not study in groups. What I'm saying is that we need the church, not as a way to God, but to become closer to God. (Also, the first sentence was meant to be rhetorical. If you read in the book of Acts, though, you find many mentions of "the church")
Why was there such thing as the early church? Did Jesus even go to church? Why did the Jews go to church, known as the synagogue? To answer these questions, we need to work from the start (not THE start which could work on many levels) and (sort-of) work backwards by looking at Leviticus 23:3;
"‘Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings."
This was after the Ten Commandments, relating to what to do on the Sabbath day. I am not focusing on the Sabbath today, though. But on Sabbath, what do most Christians generally do? Go to church! (I am not using majority as sole means of evidence, though) Why do most Christians go to church? One reason is, well, Jesus did. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we find that Jesus went to the synagogue, not just to learn, but to preach! He was even kicked out of his own home town because of what he said! (Mark 6:1-6)
Which brings us back to the question: why was there such thing as the early church? When I was searching this very same Amazing Facts website (I trust Amazing Facts as a biblical source and an inspired ministry, and most of my conclusions were made due to Amazing Facts) and one articles states that the Apostles, such as Peter, John, Paul and Phillip, went to the Jewish synagogue, a.k.a church, to preach https://www.amazingfacts.org/news-and-features/news/item/id/10934/t/is-going-to-church-necessary-on-the-sabbath
That same article states worshiping our Lord, on his Holy day, the Sabbath, with God's people, can be considered as a triple-blessing!
In conclusion, church plays a vital role in our relationship with God and others, in that we learn about God through the speaker and fellow believers. The early church knew this, and we can learn that from the Bible. The Jews had a partial understanding of it, too.
Another thing--although there are some churches that do not have the manner of Christ in their living and preaching, being taught by "man", as you say, if there's one way, there must be the other. Search for preachers and believers whose beliefs line up with the Bible, for God must be speaking through them, or else God must be contradicting himself, or am I wrong? Go to this link for more info, and keep searching-
https://ssnet.org/qrtrly/eng/97b/less05.html go to Monday April 28
God bless all of you, and may God bless Amazing Facts and their ministry. I look forward to his second coming, but in the meantime, we should live as Christ did.

To Doug, I appreciate all the things you have taught me that brought me closer to Jesus and truth of the word. Although I do not attend church and disagree with some of your remarks. One Jesus diod not say to attend church in my view as you see it. He told us we are equal. To gather and he is present in groups of 2 or 3 or more. He never belonged to a church and told us to be like him. He bnever once said to attewnd church. Actually acts tells us God does not dwell in the walls of builsings made by mans hands. Also Sunday pracxtice is Satans day. Furthermore I have studied your church. Vegaterianism pushed. I read anyone that teaches others not to eat meat that is all blessed is practicing witchery. Furthermore Carson is runnong fopr President. His words contridict the bibles teachings he is now spilling. People in your cgurch are upset . Nothing comes before Jesus. The apostales received money for work done. It teaches their are preachers and ministers although we are all equal and should all share. Women ministers is against the bible. Many reasons I do not attend church. I teach the word. I fight with my own sins constantly. I can not belong to any church because of the rules. I cannoy follow a rule I do not beleive fits with the bibles teachings such as vegetarism. So becareful Jesus not once said to belong to a church. It was the church that killed him. His apostles walked and preached. I have watched the church go against teachings. Why so many demoninations now? Does th edivisdion of thopusands of christians teach truth that Jesus preached. YUou hope your church is the true church i ve heard you state. I am the true church. Jeus remarked clearly. We are the church now. It is a spritual coinnection . If I wa sin prison i only have jesus, if i was in woods i have only jesus, he said to gathewr in end times. he did not say belong to a church with rules made up about bible. the word is the word. it is our individual judge with him. If I seem ecentirc, so be it. I would rather be one on one with Jeus, teaching others what is written than seeing a cross on a building with images and crooses all over. No image of above is to be made. There is a period after the word made in bible. then he says also not to be worshipped. but i respect the commandement no image from a bove to even be made. So I am safe to go to heaven based upon Jeus rteacjhings. The churchs seem to be told to come awaty from fornication with te catholic church. Even many SDA churches in my area are now back to sunday worship. god be with us all.

Dear George,
Let me state this very clearly: The church did not kill Jesus. If there was no Jesus, there would be no church. Because of our sins, Jesus died on that cross. He rose again, and told his disciples he would come again to establish his kingdom on Earth and blot out sin and it's origin, Satan.
The book of Revelation states that there certainly is a remnant church, with Satan persecuting it. All over the world today, there has been a battle against truth. That truth is veiled by contradictions Satan has made to trick the people of this world that God is dead, or God is not ever worth loving. As a Seventh-Day Adventist, I am consciously aware of these things. And as a Seventh-Day Adventist, I cannot stand what the Devil himself is doing to cut us off from our Heavenly Father.
We are nearing the last days, and in those last days, there will be two sides to this Great Controversy: The Beast, and God's remnant church. The Devil's deceptions have made us blind, and we cannot see without Christ. Brother, I urge you to think clearly. I urge you to decide: which side are you on? Without a church, you cannot see past your own understanding. Without glasses, people cannot see clearly. Without utensils, you cannot eat properly. Who are true church, and what are your doctrines? Do they line up with the Bible? It is true that Jesus is the head of the church, as Paul says, but why was there an early church? Why did Jesus go to church? He went to a synagogue made from human hands, and yet he knew that he was going to establish his kingdom here. It is not about the buildings, brother, but about the people. I cannot correct you, brother, in your study of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, but otherwise I cannot state that these events signify "just another crazy church that contradicts its teachings" You say you don't attend church because of its rules, either contradicting each other or because there are too much of it there. I ask of you, brother: How far have you looked?

The Holy Roman Catholic church definitely killed the man we call Jesus.....
Then 70 years later, they turn around and praise him.

What I understand from what George said is that organised religion killed Jesus, whether it be Judaism or Christianity. Jews killed him, and the Roman Catholic Church basically killed him too because they perverted his words and therefore betrayed him like Judas did. I'm not against organised religion at all, because it's not the doctrine that deters you, it's how the doctrine is communicated to you. For instance, the Jews twisted the Sabbath from a day with God to a day where you could only walk a certain distance for the whole day, a ritual along with many others that made the Sabbath a deterring burden. RCC twisted Hell from a place where the ETERNAL consequence of death is executed via fire, brimstone and lava, to an ETERNAL place where ETERNAL suffering lives with an ETERNAL demon torturing you every second in there, ETERNALLY. Both changes deter and do not reflect God's character. Either everything's wrong with organised religion, or blame the church elders. Try it.

Hebrews 10:25 says, "...not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some." I am making efforts to attend church not because I WANT to, but because Jesus said, "You are truly My disciples IF YOU OBEY ME" (John 8:31).

wwiwth all respect. i do not find people in church that need to hear the word. jesus said to go among th epoeple follow him. live as he did. poor and preach. i drive around on sunday talking to people. talk to maybe 25 a day. most are now wondering why i showed up in there face. some learned of sabbath truths and relations to end times. i go to churches and preach ti ministers about commandments and get kicked out most times. i explain about image of cross written not to do, i expolain sunday worship and get kicke dout. thats what happened to paul. doiung what the bible says to do. oi am persacuted preaching truth. corthians 2 verse 2 :9. i am punished for preaching truth and jesus said thats when he lovbes us most. i do not agree with churches rules. so many dominaations separating true christainity. jesus said we are the church. if we meet and gather and share with each other we grow, not listen to one person preach. funny thing is most christians beleive the preacher an dhardly ever open th ebible on their owm. go to church and then go home. i go on the streets and preach. i spend my money on gas to preach to strangers not on self to beach after church. i think in these times when so manyu christians think sunday isd a good day to meet, then go home and ignore sabbath teachings of working oin that day saturday need to open th ebible and study it each day. as the bible says too. be careful allowing one person to guide your views. i have learned more from doug then any minister. although, i learn from many sources, mostly from studying the bible and helping others. god bless us all.
