The Man Who Went to Hell

By Kris W. Sky | Posted August 30, 2021

John Ramirez had a dad—and his name was Satan.

Yes, it sounds sensational, and, yes, it is the testimony that this 57-year-old evangelist has been telling for the past two decades. According to Ramirez, he saw the devil as his surrogate father after being initiated into Santería at the tender age of 10.

Santería is a syncretic religion, an amalgamation of several different traditions, cultures, and, thus, religions as well. Learnreligions.com defines Santería as “[combining] influences of Caribbean tradition, West Africa’s Yoruba spirituality, and elements of Catholicism.”

From Ramirez’s testimony, it is clear that Santería is straight occultism. His storytelling is steeped in religious jargon—demon church, offerings to the devil, even prayers to him. “The devil is into religion,” says Ramirez.

The Bronx native met the prince of darkness during his initiation rite. Next, he started to attend what he calls “demon church,” which lasted the entire night and where he was “trained by witches and warlocks.” He then worked his way up to become “the third highest devil worshiper in New York.”

Going to Hell

Ramirez did not have a good relationship with his father, who abused his mother and neglected him and his siblings. He remembers often going to bed cold and hungry.

But after he “sold his soul,” the devil paid attention to him. The devil visited him and talked with him and gave him assignments. Ramirez claims to have been demon-possessed. He used to hop from nightclub to nightclub, telling fortunes to entice people into joining the devil’s army. He has been branded several times by the devil—what he calls “the mark of the beast.”

Then, one night in 1999, his life changed.

“Jesus Christ took me to hell,” Ramirez claims.

Hell was, according to Ramirez, very hot, and “the ground was breathing like a human being.” He got there via train. Though he tried desperately to escape, he could not.

“It was a place of torment,” he says.

While there, he encountered the devil, who called him a traitor and tried to take his life twice. But each time, a cross appeared and incapacitated the devil.

(Incidentally, it was a vision of another cross that launched the Christian faith into a realm of superstition and corruption—Emperor Constantine’s supposed battlefield vision of the cross galvanized him to Christianize the pagan Roman Empire.)

At this point in his testimony, Ramirez emotionally quotes Psalm 139:8, “If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.”

After returning to his body, Ramirez gave his life to Christ and became an evangelist. He’s written several books and makes paid appearances.

The Truth About Hell

But others have pointed out inconsistencies in Ramirez’s claims and doubts about his stories. For instance, he has previously described his vision from God as astroplaning, an occult “out-of-body experience” where the soul supposedly separates from the body and travels to different realms. In fact, this is how The Christian Post characterizes it.

Now, we could be asking why a staunchly Christian news source is promoting the idea of an occult practice as being of God. But even more to the point, let us “test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21), and let us do so by “[searching] the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

If we study out the term “hell” in the Bible, often its original meaning is “the grave.” The Bible is very clear what happens when we go to the grave: “The dead know nothing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5). They don’t feel (v. 6), they don’t think (Psalm 146:4), they don’t move (Isaiah 26:14). In short, “they are dead, they will not live.”

That is exactly the meaning of the verse Ramirez quoted. “Hell” in Psalm 139:8 is actually a translation for sheol, the Hebrew word for “the grave.” The verse isn’t talking about living in the burning pit of torment that Ramirez experienced. Read in context, it is praise for God, who will not forsake us, even in death. This belief is, indeed, the basis for the gospel: Jesus died for our sins, and He will give eternal life to all who accept His precious gift—even those who have gone into the grave. Yes, even the faithful who have made their bed in the dust of the earth shall God resurrect on the last day, when “death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54).

You may be surprised to learn that there is no mention anywhere in the Bible of the “hell” that Ramirez visited. According to the Bible, that place of everlasting torment from which none can escape does not exist. Scripture does, however, teach extensively of “hellfire,” which will “[come] down from God out of heaven” (Revelation 20:9) in the final judgment and forever destroy the devil, his demons, death, sin, and all sinners who did not place themselves beneath the bloodstained banner of Jesus Christ.

Oh, and Ramirez’s “mark of the beast”? The Bible has lots to say on that too—and it’s a far cry from having a pentagram carved into your arm. Check out our equally informative Study Guide “The Mark of the Beast” for the Bible’s truth of the devil’s mark.

Take to heart God’s counsel in these last days: “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16).

I am a Christian brother walking the narrow way. I am in the word everyday I'm building my prayer life as we speak. I don't watch any bad shows or listen to any bad music. I make sure my eyes and ears keep out anything that contradicts God's word. I am not perfect by any means and I don't try to be I just try to kill all sin that is in my life with God's help. God is cleaning me up. If anybody really wants to hear somebody that knows the Bible inside and out very well. Watch John MacArthur. How is a place that was built for the devil and his angels. So right there says it is a place. It also says that it is eternal. So you either get everlasting life or Everlasting torment. Whether there is actual fire in hell right now I'm not sure. People say there is some people say there isn't until everything is thrown into the Lake of Fire. But it is a place of Torment. But I just learned something last night and this is what I would like to share. So if you are saved when you die you do not die you actually just go to sleep. And you are waiting for Jesus to come back. But when you die your spirit will go either to heaven or hell. But when Jesus comes back he will lift up our bodies. Our physical bodies and we will be reunited spirit with bodies and live in the presence of God. That is the truth so do not listen to Somebody That Doesn't Know. Because I would never mislead anyone. God bless everyone. Jesus is the way and the only way and the Father is the destination

What kind of salvation could God offer if there were alternate ways of escape or if there were anything but infinite suffering to be saved from? "The fear of hell is the basis for the Christian faith." -Madelyn Murray OHair

Ecclesiastes 9:5 is THE Adventist proof text for soul sleep. But a reading of the entire chapter of Ecclesiastes 9 shows that this chapter is not even talking about the state of the soul after death. In context, it is talking about how everyone eventually dies, so while you are alive, enjoy it!

The Bible does speak about hell being a real place. Jesus himself warned about hell (Matt 5:29-30, 10:28, 25:41). See also 2 Thess 1:9 and Rev 21:8. Revelation 14:10 warns that those who receive the mark of the beast “will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever...”. I have to disagree with the author of this article. That sounds like everlasting torment to me.

Jesus meant what he said. The Bible means what it says. Don’t be deceived. Read Bible passages in context for yourself so that you can know the truth.

You are correct! There is no burning hell, If you had a horse that broke it's leg, most would shoot the horse to put him out of suffering! If God install in you to have mercy, don't you think he's the same? Being the a much higher spirit? The books of Daniel and Revaluation, are books of symbols an phro. That's what Jesus and John were talking about, being without God is a torment! If you have a Vail over your eyes you won't see it! He who has a ear let him hear! Your lack of faith will blind you from the truth! Those of you who keep believing in the pegans Way need to pray and read the bible again and again and again! God bless!

It is written that you can do nothing without God, the Word also says the dead know nothing because you are without God, therefore you are not in heaven if you are without God, ask for wisdom and it will be given to you seek and you shall find. Elementary dear Watson!

In Matthew 13:42, Jesus says: "And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." HELL IS FOREVER! All who enter hell — abandon all hope! The horror of hell — for even one second is unbearable — but FOREVER!
Hell is forever.
In Matthew 25:46, the same word—eternal—is used to describe eternal life for the righteous and the eternal punishment of hell for the unrighteous. According to Jesus, hell will be eternal.
"But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." - Matthew 10:28

"And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” - Matthew 25:46

There are many verses that discuss the subject of hell, for it is not a place where anyone wants to spend eternity, so it is important for Christians to know the Scriptures describing this horrible place.

Is Sodom and Gomorrah burning today? Jude said they were punished with eternal fire. Eternal fire in the bible,as unquenchable fire simply menas until it lasts. A deeper study is required . Jesus is not a sadistic devil who will burn people forever for 30 ou 70 years of sin. That's what Satan wants you to think and teach. The lake of fire is the end of it. And sin will be no more nor wicked nor evil angels. Can't be any other way if God is indeed just

Why could a perfect loving merciful God send people to hell for eternity? He wouldnt. Hell/Hades/death/grave all means the same thing. How can a person live in hell when it means death? Its an oxymoron. Hell fire is meant for the wicked to be burned up, gone forever. Nonexustant. It was the pagan teaching that crept into the christian church on this so called living in hell, a place of the dead after the wicked are ashes.

It goes back to God who created it and in reserve until the resurrection, you still have no consciences until you have a new body.

Hell IS a place of eternal torment, remember the story of the rich man in hell that Jesus told about, he could see, he could hear, he could reason, he could feel the very real fire, he asked for even a drop of water on his tongue, he asked father Abraham please go warn my brothers so they do not come to this place, there was a great gulf fixed between paradise where Abraham was and hell where he was. There’s many many scripture that refer to an eternal torment for the sinner and the devil and his angels. Where the FIRE is not quenched and the worm does not die. Do not be deceived, keep searching the scriptures for the truth and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you. You do not want to get this one wrong. God bless. Hell and the grave were two different places.

Until the resurrection. You don't die and fly straight to heaven. Jesus didn't go straight to heaven as we see he laid in the grave even on the Sabbath day. Read Job 14:11

You ought to be ashamed of yourselves preaching false doctrine. There is a hell, and it's hot! And it burns forever, and ever. Jesus said strive to enter into the straight gate, for broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be that enter there in. Straight is the way and narrow is the gate that leadeth unto life! There's only one way to make heaven! Jesus said; except a man be born again of the water and spirit he cannot see the kingdom. John 3:3 drop down to John 3:5 Jesus told Nicodemus except a man be born again of the water and if the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven. Jesus gave Peter the keys to the kingdom. Jesus said thou art Peter and upon this rock I will be my church! Peter had a revelation of the oneness of God! Jesus asked his disciples who do say that I am, and Peter spoke up and said thou art the Christ , the son of the living God. John 10:30 Jesus said I and my father are one. Phillip asked Jesus he said Lord show us the Father and it will suffice us, Jesus said Peter when you see me you've seen the Father! What message did Peter preach after the acension of Jesus! Acts 2:38 then Peter said unto them repent, and be Baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost! For the promise is unto you, and to your children to all that are afar off even as many as our Lord our God shall call! Repentance, baptism, and the infilling of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues! That's Bible! Read it for yourself! And yes Jesus created a real hell where the devil, and his angels and everyone that rejects this bible will end up! Jesus is coming soon! Time is winding up! There's a lot of voices in the earth be sure your listening to the right ones! This ain't it folks! Hells hot, and it's real!

One question please. Can you see the people of Sodom and Gomorrah burning 🔥 now. Where are those people. Is it still burning. 🤔 My friend hell is real but it will only burn until the ashes of those are burnt up. God character is not like the devil. The firgure of speech the writer was explaining is that sin must burn and its existence until it is no more. When God will make a new heaven and a new earth 🌎 Isaiah 66:22,23 study line upon line. 🙏

There are a lot of Bible verses that tells that there is indeed hell and hades which means the lake of fire would engulfed like it says in Rev.14-11. The lake of fire is intended for people who dont accept Jesus Christ as their lord and personal saviour.

Hell is real. You will not misled and knows the truth if you search God's Holy Word/Scripture .. the Bible.

Greatings. Just a question, If hell, as most people understand it, is not in the bible, so what does this bible verse mean in Revelation 14:11 "And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” Thank you for replying.

All very good points, but I was brought to this church by “visions” I had while practicing a form of meditation which I later learned was more “spiritist” than Christian. Nonetheless that is what got me interested in Adventism, where I could, by the grace of God and help from the congregation, begin learning the scriptural truth. So it can be a complicated process, especially when so many of us are/were so deeply affected by, even inculcated in, the sinful world. Ramirez’s path to the church is one thing, but if he’s still going around preaching the pagan doctrines of the eternal soul, and hell as a place of eternal suffering, then he needs to be corrected.
