Five Ways to Battle the Blues

We all have moments of feeling blue. It’s normal to have these “down times,” especially after a significant loss or working through a difficult relationship problem. Life is stressful, and everyone eventually gets hit by challenges that can knock them off their feet. But when your feelings stay low, day after day, getting in the way of normal, everyday life, when you are having a difficult time doing your work and staying connected with others, you might be battling depression.

People who suffer from depression have persistent feelings of sadness and hopeless beyond a few days. When a person keeps feeling unmotivated, week after week, and just can’t seem to shake off these demons of discouragement, it’s time to take a step back and get help. God does not intend for us to live with feelings of emptiness, worthlessness, helplessness, and decreased energy. Depression not only casts a dark shadow over our spiritual life, it can affect our physical health.

There are many excellent resources that can help you overcome depression. We recommend Dr. Neil Nedley’s Depression Recovery (click here for more information). There are many factors that can lead to a deeply depressed state of mind and a short article like this one will not cover all of them. But here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Get a physical. Schedule an appointment with your doctor and have a complete physical examination. Sometimes there are biological sources to depression. Though for many people this is not the case, it is worth taking steps to rule out physical causes.

2. Care for your body. Many people who slip into the slumps also neglect caring for their health. Taking a 30-minute brisk walk can do wonders to clear your mind and change your mood. Fresh air, sunlight, and exercise can rejuvenate a person’s feelings rather quickly. Also, drink plenty of water.

3. Guard what you eat. Overburdening your stomach with food that is hard on your system (loaded with refined fats, sugars, and oils) can affect your mind. Increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. Try eating less food. A depressed stomach can lead to a depressed mind.

4. Test your thoughts. For many people, depression begins in their thoughts. Lots of discouraged people do not link their thinking with their feelings, but the two are highly connected. When a person unknowingly says, “I’m worthless. I have no future. Nobody loves me. I can’t ever do anything right,” these exaggerated and distorted musings will shape your moods. Stop and replace them with truth: “I have value in the eyes of God. He loves me and promises to give me a hopeful future.”

5. Swing the sword of the Spirit. The Bible says “the sword of the Spirit” … “is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). Memorizing Scripture and quoting it out loud will reinforce truth in your mind and push back demons of darkness. Here are five texts to start with: Jeremiah 29:11; Proverbs 3:5, 6; 2 Corinthians 12:9; John 16:33; Joshua 1:9.

Begin with these five tips. You might need additional help, such as attending a depression recovery seminar or Christian counseling. But don’t neglect these simple steps that will get you on the right pathway to healing.

If you have recurrent thoughts of death or suicide,
we strongly suggest you immediately call 9-1-1.
There are loving people who can help you get help.

I was battling depression for over 15 years, but it wasn’t until I started applying the Word to my daily life that I started noticing a light in my darkness. One day I said” Father you’re my Creator, I trust in You completely. I’m not going to take my medication anymore and I will start to focus on what you say about me. I will remember daily who’s I am and understand that everything you teach is for my benefit to have the life you intended for me to have”. I know that depression is related to a chemical imbalance in my brain but my faith in God cured me from my depression and I no longer feel hopeless. What came to me one day in my studies was” I’m not trying to take your life son, I’m giving you one”. I now let God run my life and I’m dependent upon Him in every way. I no longer worry about anything because I know as long as I keep Him first NOTHING can stray me from His righteousness.

I had been reading & studying the Word for seven years, taught 4-5 year olds bible study, as well as an adult bible study. I was sorely tested, and I failed. I was backslidden for two years, & the Lord restored me to Himself.
It is an example to me now, during times of uncertainty, abandonment, or my life being turned upside down, I will run to the Lord now, instead of trying to handle it on my own. I will fail every time doing in my own strength. Frankly, I don't want to even want to leave the house before I pray, or in my vehicle. I pray while I drive, pray while I am at work, because I do not trust myself. To decrease, while Jesus increases is my goal.
I am unreliable, but I am at my best relying on Jesus. As stated in the article, thoughts can drag you down. I listen to the Word, do the devotionals, & watch clean programming.
Too much input can bring you down, so taking time to be silent, and in a quiet environment is good for the soul to meditate on the Father, and those things, mostly people He wants me to pray for.
Great article. I hope my story helps someone.

Depression is a very real and sometimes very frightening reality. I have been helped by using an iodine supplement and a liquid mineral supplement with my meals. Adding evening primrose oil really helped a relative who suffers from depression, though It wasn’t helpful for me. It takes time. The change didn’t happen overnight. It can get a little costly taking supplements three times a day. But I’m healing, so it’s worth the cost to me.

Having been working as a Christian counselor for many years I have come across many that have been depressed. Yes, keeping the faith and daily walks with the Lord is very important in keeping yourself grounded. However most people get caught up with self medicating using unhealthy methods in coping particularly with the foods we eat. I have found a very holistic and healthy way to help people live a healthier lifestyle all by changing their relationship with food. If your interested look over the Shape Reclaim website for further information. I am a certified practitioner and was once a client, having changed my relationship with food and finding how most of the food I was consuming was causing so much inflammation, which made be very unhealthy. I have lost 45 pounds by eating clean food and understanding how it was impacting my mental health was so beneficial to me. I hope this information helps as it was worth changing my life and it also helped me get closer to the Lord as he gave me the strength I needed during this new life journey.

Depression has many faces and wears several hats.Sometimes we encounter people who appear to be angry always, uptight, sullen, anxious,.Most of this the underlying factor is depression. They don’t know it ,until someone cares enough to say “ Heah what’s really going on here” .But most of us will write them off as undesirables.
There’s a cultural aspect to depression .By this I mean .Certain people because of their background and ethnicity ,have a certain perception of religion and worship .Which delegates mental health From other illnesses. This happens Right here in our church .They view depression as one of the sins which will shut you out of heaven .
I don’t know enough of their history to tell where this particular belief originated from.
What I do know is these Brothers and Sisters firmly believe if one confess to being depressed ,That person is not walking with God ,one definitely does not posses the Holy Spirit and suffer from depression,
As a result of this belief thousands refuse to admit any mental disorders.Refuse to seek help and continue pretending to be normal .But it surfaces in many ways .It’s very sad .And we need to prayer for a change in this area .I pray it happens today .

I agree. I am one of the few who has been diagnosed with depression from birth. The diagnosis process took many many days and hours in a professional office and hospital setting, lots of paperwork and family history. I have had to keep it as quiet as possible because I learned a very long time ago that some people, think that that I don't have a Real relationship with God when I am depressed. That there is no reason to be blue when God is in your life. In Heaven that will be true. In a world where the evil one walks, where sin has infiltrated every single atom, sadly, it's just not true.

As I wake up in the early morn the Lord immediately comes to my mind. I smile and say “thank you Father for my life”. There is so much to be thankful for that I need the entire day to praise Him for all that He is and all of the benefits that he loads me up with daily. It’s comforting and reassuring recalling the difficult times He’s brought me through only to bless me even more. I could write a book! But a much better book has already been written. And it’s not about me but rather the One who died and rose again for me. It will take the rest of my life diligently seeking Him to fully discover His truths. Every day is new and a fresh start to ask for His perfect will in my life. Just knowing that He , the God and Creator of the universe and all of the souls that ever will be loves me and watches over me. Surely my cup runneth over! I believe and know that when I draw nigh to God, He draws closer to me. And when I lay down to sleep at night I praise Him again.

I'm 59 years old and female. I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with COPD and I was beyond scared! My lung function test indicated 49% capacity. After having had flu a year ago, the shortness of breath, coughing and chest pains continued even after being treated with antibiotics. I've been smoking two packs a day for 36 years. Being born without a sternum caused my ribs to be curled in just one inch away from my spine, resulting to underdeveloped lungs. At age 34 I had surgery and it was fixed. Unfortunately my smoking just caused more damage to my already under developed lungs. The problem was having is that I enjoy smoking and don't want to give up! Have tried twice before and nearly went crazy and don't want to go through that again. I saw the fear in my husband and children's eyes when I told them about my condition then they start to find solution on their own to help my condition.I am an 59 now who was diagnose COPD emphysema which I know was from my years of smoking. I started smoking in school when smoking was socially acceptable. I remember when smoking was permitted in hospitals. It was not known then how dangerous cigarettes were for us, and it seemed everybody smoked but i was able to get rid of my COPD lung condition through the help of total cure herbal foundation my husband bought, has the right herbal formula to help you get rid and repair any lung conditions and cure you totally with their natural organic herbs,it class products at affordable prices. Purchase these medicines and get the generic medicines delivered in USA, UK & Australia,I wish anybody who starts smoking at a young age would realize what will eventually happen to their bodies if they continue that vile habit throughout their life.

This is really helpful for anyone seeking guidance on how to battle depression. Medicine, while effective, is clearly proven to be one of the many ways to overcome such a debilitating diversion from life. Health is important and living right can highly impact how we feel and operate on a daily basis.

Thank you for this wonderful article. I have suffered from depression for many years and have been on medication through out this time. But sometimes we just need to be reminded of the simple basics that we tend to forget in the business of life. Little "ah-ha" and "oh yes" moments while reading have helped me to refocus. God bless and thank you. Dove
