In the 1880s when it was decided to have the World’s Fair Exposition in Paris they commissioned Gustave Eiffel to build something monumental and enduring. Parisians hated it and demanded it be torn down. However, they grew to love it and today it is the most popular monument and most easily recognizable icon in the world.
