Are there warnings against following false teachers?

Scripture: 2 Peter 2:1-22, Matthew 5:19
Does the Bible warn us about false teachers who say we do not need to keep the commandments? 2 Peter 2 speaks to this question as well as Matthew 5 warning us about those who teach we may break the commandments.

Caller: I was wondering if there is anything in the Bible that is a warning for people that follow him, and for him as well, for false teachings.

Pastor Doug: The caller asked question about people who may be false teachers. The Bible says quite a bit about that. It says in 2 Peter 2, 'But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.' It is very dangerous to tell somebody that God's commandments don't matter and that it's a sin to keep them. Jesus said that those are the lowest people who tell or teach people to break the commandments and break them. Matthew 5.
