Does the Bible say women should not be preachers?

Scripture:
Does the Bible say women should not be preachers? Paul does speak of some issues with women, but nothing that says they cannot preach. There does seem to be an indication of men having a role. There are women prophets, but no reference to a woman being a priest.

These comments seem very biased - men don't want to listen to women or have women in authority. Seems very patriarchal in a negative way. I say pray & listen to God and He will tell you the truth.

1 Corinthians 11:3-9
But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man... For man is not from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.
1 Timothy 2:11-14
Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

Hi Joseph, His real name in Hebrew is Yeshua means (Saviour). I don't think anyone really knows what he looked like way back then since there were no selfie's being taken "lol". There was a documentary where they thought they had found the death cloth that he was wrapped in. His body had left a imprint on it of his face. I don't know how true that is. Out of all the painting's of Christ somebody must have known something. The bible says that God made him where he would not be desired I guess that meant sexually looked upon was the reason why. I do know that the bible lets us know that he was a Jew, and they are dark complected its very hot in the Mediterranean so there pigment in there skin is made to take the sun. Talking about the rapture read or goggle 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 tells you about the catching-up. Jesus is his name in English, Jesus from Nazareth a Nazarene from the Lineage of David. Praise God I thank him for what he done on the Cross by his Grace I'm saved. Jesus defeated Satan because he conquered Death, Hell, and the Grave. Glory to God If your not saved get saved while he still can be found. I love you brother in the name of Jesus.

Mr Ronald, you are mistaken. Before God we are all equal, for there is no male nor female. Our only differences are the things that can prevent one from doing what was divinely assigned to the other. Should men go to school? Do women also have brains in their heads? Should they go to school as well? Can men read? Can women? Is the bible an exception? Do not we have women teaching is schools and universities? Is that an offence? Is it not all knowledge. Is it not intellectual knowledge good for humans? Is not not moral knowledge good as well. Should not both teach these subjects? is it an offence for women to preach and teach? Is there anything wrong with that? If a woman preaches and souls are won to the Lord, is that evil?
Stop thinking like a man, think like God. Change your old mentality.
Do not we have women who are presidents and so forth?

Prophecy is to TESTIFY, NOT preach. The definition is in Revelations 19:10.
To be a preacher, pastor or deacon, 1 Timothy 3:2, you must be the husband of one wife. A woman cannot be the husband of one wife.

The world has changed but Gods word has never changed, it stays the same.
Just because some women are preaching most of gods truths and have many followers doesn't mean that they are teaching all his truths, he says not to take away any of his truths, must go by all his words.

You should understand the male type of stereotype society of those days and you are very much contributing to it. A man and a woman will be caught in adultery, the man will be set free and the women will be stoned to death. Is the gospel more defective in the moth of a particular gender? Are there not women teaching in universities? Was it like that in the past? Should we continue marginalising them just because of their gender?
Change your mind.

Maybe they aren't preaching all his truth which he says not to take away anything from his word. Even though they speak a lot of it. Many men preachers don't preach the death on the cross and the only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ more than once a year, the blood of Jesus is the most important thing to preach about.

I think God can use anyone and anything to draw people to Him or make His truth known. In the Bible He even used a donkey. People's behavior today will not ever negate what is in the Bible, and cannot justify Christians acting in a way contrary to that Word. According to the Bible, Beth Moore is operating in disobedience when she preaches to men, because teaching and rebuking from the Bible brings with it authority.

People's behaviour has already meddled with the Bible, compilers choosing to ignore or down-play women's roles & some mistranslated entirely as in altering the original word for human to 'man' which some then mistook to mean only men. I agree the essential truth of God/Jesus will remain, regardless of man-made sexism that hangs over religions.

^ Sadly the role of women in establishing the early church has been written out & ignored over time as Christianity gained popularity, to fit in more with patriarchal culture. Similar to how the role of non-whites in our armed forces often got written out of WW2, as if they were never there - We don't get a full factual picture as someone has edited bits out.

I'm not here to trivialise words of apostle Paul, but to help bring clarity to the matter at hand. Deuteronomy 19:15, Matthews 18:16 and 2corinthians13:1 tells us that by mouth of two or three witnesses is a matter established,
On the issues of 1Timothy 5:12 it's only one witness which is apostol Paul,

Women in authority in the church cause more problems than they solve and inhibit the flow of the Holy Spirit from God. It's like they've become non believers and have turned themselves over to rightousness in their own sight. There is a way that seems right to a man but that way leads unto death.

Can you share where that is in the bible with me. I'm not trying to put down women. I just think God gave us different roles. Men really can't do what women do well, so why do women need to take mens roles? It's just confusing our society and ruining peoples lives and even the churches are buying into it. It has to be undone and humanity restored for there to be any hope.

Why do they say it's OK for a woman teach kids lead song's witness to men on the street lead prayer be in authority over banquets And so on if they are to be silent?
Hide Replies 3

jodietysverjensen
Well, firstly, not all translations use the word "silent" in the way we know it today. More accurately, it is "hēsychía" (hay-soo-khee'-ah): stillness, i.e. desistance from bustle or language. So, it means in a peaceful and quiet manner - not crazy, rudely, or aggressively.
Secondly, there are no admonitions against women teaching anyone but specifically men - in an authoritative situation. Does this mean women cannot share the good news of the gospel? No. It was women who were told to share the news of Christ's resurrection. In 1 Timothy when Paul states that he does not allow women "to teach or have authority over men", he is stating guidelines for how a church should be run. Are we permitted to say "Oh - well, that was only for that culture, for that time"? No, because in Corinthians we are told to follow Paul 's example, for he had been instructed by God on how to conduct himself and run a church. Later in Timothy and again in Titus, we are given guidelines for the qualifications of an overseer of a church - who speaks, teaches, corrects, and leads with the authority of God's Word, and those qualifications can only apply to men.

Generally speaking, the silence is for male or female who are causing confusion within the congregation, i.e. arguing, fighting and causing a disruption to the worship experience. I believe the scripture alludes to the fact if anyone does not know how to act in the house of God, they should stay home and ask questions as to what their behavior should be. (Fear the Lord).

Read 1 Tim. 3. 1-6, 1 Tim 2. 11-14, and 1 Cor. 14. 33-36, and then tell me what you think about what the Bible says about women preachers, this man said Jesus never said anything about it but Paul did, Paul was an Apostle of Christ and taught what Christ commanded him as with the other Apostles that represented Christ, it also says to follow the Apostles teachings. We all love women and know they are capable, this is an issue of spiritual authority.

The only time Christ gave Paul a clear vision was in Acts 26:13-15. In the Epistles his inspiration is not clear (2 Corinthians 8:8-10). Explain
1 Corinthians 7:12 where it says "But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not leave her."
Paul Himself said he was an Apostle of Christ (not saying he was not one, but he is the only witness to this). His teachings and what is in the Gospels are totally different. I will end with this as well, Revelation 21:12-14 says that Jesus Christ only named 12 Apostles to judge the 12 Tribes of Israel. Where does Paul fit into that equation?

Many false teachers try to twist the Scriptures and say things like that is your interpretation. No! That is what it clearly says! No woman should teach in the public worship and service of the church.
2. 1 Timothy 2:12 “But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.”
3. 1 Peter 3:7 “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”
It all goes back to creation and order. Man was created first, then woman was created for man.
Not only that, it was Eve who was deceived by Satan, but sin entered through Adam and not Eve and we were saved by the second Adam Jesus Christ.
The husband is the leader and the protector. Instead of questioning Eve the one who sinned first, God questioned Adam the leader. Adam was the head of mankind and Eve was Adam’s responsibility. Eve tried to be the leader. She tried to do her own thing. She usurped Adam’s responsibility in leadership and she was deceived and he subjected himself to her deception. We should also note that Satan tempted Eve over Adam.
4. 1 Timothy 2:13-14 “For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.”
5. 1 Corinthians 11:9 “for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake.”
6. 2 Corinthians 11:3 “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.”

“And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:35‬ ‭
So, if women are suppossed to become pastors why would Paul even say this? He was a follower of Jesus Christ and therefore wrote accordingly.
Everyone needs to read the whole Bible and pray to God for wisdom and discernment to understand it.
God will give you the answers you seek far better than any man made discussion.

You do realize you need resources to understand the Greek behind the English words you just quoted right? The bible is a canon of scripture put together by a counsel of men. You have to be very careful how you approach anything from the bible. You need historical resources, lexicons, and more than one translation (or a more literal one like the HCSB).

Caller:  Where is this in the Bible that there should not be women preachers who do their sermon in the church, in the pulpit?

Pastor Doug:  Where does it say there should not be women preachers?

Caller:  Right.

Pastor Doug:  Well there are a number of statements, most of them made by the Apostle Paul, that talk about women talking in church and women praying with their heads uncovered.  Some of those have been taken to try and support that women should not preach but I don't find Paul really saying women should not preach.  There's no statement like that.  The Bible does seem to indicate - by example - that it was God's plan for a patriarchal system where the men were the Priests, servant leaders in the families and in the churches.  Jesus had a number of disciples, men and women but among the Apostles, He only chose men.  God had a number of Prophets that were men and women.  Of course, Prophets are women that preach you realize.  That's what prophecy means, to preach but God never had any Priests that were women.

Caller:  Right.  Right.

Pastor Doug:  Let me see if I can find the best example I think of in the Old Testament.

Caller:  When you say Priest, what's the difference between a Priest and a preacher?

Pastor Doug:  Not a lot.  There is a difference between a Prophet and a preacher.  For instance, in the Old Testament you've got the three children of Amram and Jochabed were Miriam, Aaron and Moses.  They were three siblings.  All three children were Prophets.  How would you like to have three children that are Prophets Pastor Dick?  Have them giving you messages?

Co-Host:  Strong huh?

Pastor Doug:  But, only the boys - Moses and Aaron - were the Priests.  In other words, nowhere in the Bible does a woman offer an offering.  In part of being a being a Pastor or a Priest, Priest in the Old Testament, Pastor in the New, was the Priest and the Pastor would make the offerings for the family.  The Pastor would, in the New Testament times, administer Communion.  So you have no example in the Bible of a woman being ordained as a Priest or a Pastor but you do have women who are teaching and preaching and doing evangelism.  Do you see the distinction?

Caller:  Yes.  So are you saying that ...

Pastor Doug:  Women do have gifts of ministry, but I don't see a precedent in the Bible for women being ordained as Pastors or Elders.

Caller:  Okay so are you saying then maybe - I don't want to put anything in your mouth but - you know because I know some - two women I know of are Pastors.

Pastor Doug:  Yes I realize there are a lot of women Pastors and I'm not seeking to condemn people who may beg to differ.  I've got friends that are women Pastors but in my personal convictions from studying the Bible, I don't find an example of it in the Bible and whenever I challenge them to produce one they just change the subject - because the pattern of hundreds, if not thousands of Ministers and Priests in the Bible, all of them were men.

Caller:  Okay.

Pastor Doug:  Hey I've written an article you can send for.  It's called Unisex in Jesus.  It talks about the distinctions that God identifies in the Bible.  It's free.  Call the resource number and tell them you want Pastor Doug's article called Unisex in Jesus.  And it says a lot more than I can say right here probably says it better too.
