How important is it to seek Godly counsel when making decisions?

Scripture: Proverbs 11:14
Proverbs chapter 11 speaks of the safety in having a multitude of counselors. Doesn't God speak to us through His Word? Do we need to seek people?

Caller: There's a Scripture, I believe it's in Proverbs, where it says there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors, is that the way it's worded?

Pastor Doug: Yes. That's Proverbs 11:14, and let me read that to you: 'Where there is no counsel, the people fall but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.' Is that the one you're looking for?

Caller: Yes.

Pastor Doug: Ok. You have a question about that or you just needed some help finding that passage?

Caller: Well no I have a question. I just don't quite understand it.

Pastor Doug: Well the Lord is telling us that God not only speaks to us through His Word, God speaks to us through Christian counsel, Godly counsel. There are many stories in the Bible that tell us not to reject the counsel of the Elders.

Caller: Right.

Pastor Doug: Perhaps you remember in the Bible the story of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, and when he came into power, the people of Israel said are you going to lighten our tax burden or are you going to make it harder? If you lighten it, we'll serve you. Well Solomon's counselors the old men said cooperate with the people and they'll serve you forever, but if you answer them roughly you're going to loose them. Well he rejected the counsel of his father's advisors and he took the counsel of the buddies that grew up with him in the palace, and he lost the kingdom. And so having Godly counsel and listening to them, there's safety.

You know I sit on a number of boards Carol - and I've got lots of ideas. I'm never short on wild ideas and every now and then I have a good one. But as I sit on these boards and I tell my friends 'Hey I'd like to do this', and I listen to the wisdom that we've surrounded ourselves with on our different boards. They say, 'Hey Doug that's a good idea but - well have you considered this?' and I think, 'Oh yeah maybe it isn't such a good idea' or I need to modify it. And so the Lord speaks to us through different people. That's why Jesus sent the disciples out two by two so they can encourage and counsel with one another. Ok?

Caller: Right.

Pastor Doug: You might hear in the background - we've got our break music coming up Carol. I hope that helped to answer your question.
