Isaiah 44:22: Is there a difference between transgression and sin? God will blot out our transgressions with a thick
cloud, but our sin with a cloud. Clearly there is a difference.
Can you also help me understand about the difference between repentance and forgiveness? I ask God for forgiveness,
but repentance is that different? I am deeply sorry for my sin, is that repentance?
Can you help me understand these two questions. If you would let me know if you have any books that would help me, let me know, I will call and order them?

I believe Isaiah is employing a poetic way of underscoring God’s great gift of forgiveness by emphasizing the same thing twice. What a beautiful offer God was making to His wayward people!

There are actually 3 different words, sin, iniquity and transgression, that are used interchangeably throughout the Old Testament. Psalm 32:5 is a good example:

I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

But in looking a little closer at the Hebrew words used, there could be a little more nuance. The dictionary says that sin is transgression and iniquity is perversity. I think a good illustration for the difference between sin and iniquity would be an archer who is trying to hit his target. If he does not have the skill and strength to pull the bow back in order to let the arrow go to hit the target, that would illustrate our sinful nature and how we often” miss the mark” so to speak. Iniquity would be if the archer has both the skill and the strength to hit the target, but he chooses to aim in another direction. The word for iniquity in Hebrew has more of the flavor of a presumptuous, deliberate sin. So all of these categories are “sin” in the sense of being a transgression of the law for which we are guilty before a holy God, but iniquity seems to be more premeditated and intentional.

Repentance has several aspects. It involves recognizing sin, feeling sorrow for it, realizing our utter helplessness to overcome sin, and asking God for forgiveness and the power to turn away from it. You’ll find a good presentation on this in Pastor Doug’s “New Heart” series at this link: https://www.amazingfacts.org/media-library/media/e/25000/t/real-repentance

Ephesians 2:8 is an important verse, because it tells us that by God's grace are we saved and allowed into Heaven. I think it is arrogant and cocky to be so sure, and to say,"I know where I'm going when I die...." People should not be so sure of their Salvation when they are living a crooked life. The ones that say they know that they are going to Heaven are the ones that are doing the most evil.
