Top 5 Reasons to Memorize Scripture

By Curtis Rittenour | Posted June 20, 2013

The late evangelist Byron Spears was known as the “Walking Bible” because of his amazing ability to quote as many as 100 Bible passages in a single sermon—all from memory! It was incredible and life-changing for audiences to hear him thunder off Bible passages convincingly and with confidence without an open Bible before him.

No doubt, such a skill takes lots of time to grow and hone, but it is well worth the effort! Here are the top five reasons you need to be memorizing Scripture today …

5. It will help you overcome temptation.
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). Remember that Jesus overcame the devil’s temptations by proclaiming, “It is written” (Matthew 4:1–11). When you are tempted to sin, you will be empowered to do the same if you’ve memorized empowering Bible passages. The Holy Spirit will bring to mind the Scriptures you have stored in your heart, working like the “sword of the Spirit” to defeat evil; this sword is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17).

4. It will increase your awareness of God’s will in your life.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). Whenever you are faced with a choice—big or small—you can know that the Holy Spirit will bring to mind Scriptures that will help lead you in the way God wants you to go. The Word of God is His will for you—so do everything possible to fill your mind with Scripture.

3. It will help you and others thrive during times of trial.
“Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). Are you or someone you know tired, lonely, afraid—but you don’t have a Bible sitting around nearby? Sometimes when we’re discouraged, it’s hard to do anything—even to pick up God’s Word—except dwell in our own sorrows and worries. So imagine the joy you can bring to someone by spontaneously speaking His beloved promises, for his or her exact need, from your heart!

2. It will make you a better witness.
“Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness” (1 Peter 3:15). Sometimes a witnessing opportunity can catch us off guard, without a Bible or a sharing resource in hand—and memorizing Scripture about important Bible truths and the power of the gospel can make all the difference in a witnessing opportunity scheduled by God!

1. It will strengthen your relationship with God.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). The Word of God changes you in every way. Every moment you spend in God’s Word is another moment in communion with God. What better thing to do than to prayerfully focus on a Scripture, to focus on the mind of God, and solidify His Word, His will, and His heart into you own heart?

Alaska. I began memorizing scripture because I couldn’t sleep but 2 to 4 hours. So I began to notice the scripture calendar I had years ordered and this began my memorization keepsakes. Now it has been a custom that I enjoy daily. It brings God deep in my soul and love more for Him in my heart.

I’m so blessed, thankful and grateful to God and to Amazing Facts this is how my time, love for God began. Thank you for listening! Keep on memorizing, store up the treasures in your heart of heaven!

I'm storing up God's word in my heart because I have a hard time meditating deeply on His Word otherwise. My mind gets so distracted. But memorizing is a fun way to really focus on every word, and on themes, repetitions, etc. Also, reviewing memorized chapters is a great activity for my commute to work, waiting at the doctor's office, etc.

This summer I heard an inspiring sermon on memorizing scripture and knew that God was calling me to get back to it. I began using a free program online called Scripture Typer which has made it incredibly easy for me (I love typing). I am over 50 years old and have been hiding over 100 verses a month! But beyond the shear numbers, I have been praying with my verses, meditating on them, studying them, and they have turned my life completely around. The 1st love experience--when I first accepted Jesus--has returned. I have such a deep hunger for God's Word, for living like Jesus, and sharing Him with all I can. And I am having such victory in Christ, I just want to praise God all day long! Memorizing Scripture helps me to keep close to Jesus all day long

I have started, again, to memorize God's promises. Friday morning during my devotion He gave me this one. "In quietness and confidence shall be your strength." Isaiah 30:15 About an hour later my husband showed up at my work place and told me he had lost our check book. I started to go into a bit of a panic and then went back into work after he left and sat down to pray. I remember this scripture and prayed and gave it all to God in my prayers. It was good and I didn't get all excited. I went about work and waited believing "that all things work together for the good" and to "give thanks in all things" repeating that several times. My husband showed up again at work a little while later, about an 45 minutes, and handed me the check book. He had been in the store and it had fallen out of his pocket onto the tomatoes display and was still there. God is so wonderful and good. Then on the way home from work that day my car died. It seemed that it had overheated. We managed to make it home but the car died two more times. Again I remember that morning's verse, prayed and stayed calm and overcame my mouth from getting upset, stressed, or discouraged. God's word is my strength and gives me the ability to overcome temptation at my time of need. This is my reason for memorizing His scripture, I have memorized half of this one and it is next on the list. I need to hide His work in my heart so that I don't sin against Him. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to memorize. Thank you Kelly

I just found your blog and its really nice. I really like how you gave reasons why we should memorize scripture not just how, because the day we live in people have forgotten how important knowing scripture is. I found #4 particularly a blessing. I just recently made a short youtube video on memorizing scripture, because I find it extremely important. https://youtu.be/DEC2OoP_aS8

Excellent tips. When a verse speaks to my heart, I seem to memorize it almost instantly, as I used to memorize love poems. I believe GOD's Holy WORD is sometimes a love letter to us. In times of trials GOD knows exactly what verse to cause you to remember, or to slip right before your eyes, as you open the Holy Bible. We have a truly Loving FATHER. Halleluyah!

I have been trying hard to memorize scripture, but I find I can't remember the whole verse but I do remember parts of it. Like "do not worry about tomorrow, Tomorrow will bring it's own issues, God takes care of the birds and grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, He loves us much more than that. Enough to give His only begotten Son for us." I think of those words, and it makes me feel better. I think it's important to remember scripture, I just have a hard time doing it, once I remember one then I forget the previous one.

I often have times when my thoughts are bombarded by memories of my past failures. Though I know that God has forgiven me and has changed me a lot, still I get weighed down with thinking how I have let Him down. At times like these I quote scriptures and/or read my Bible, asking God to help me focus on Him instead of me, and to make good choices in the future. I know that Satan would like to bog me down to ruin any good witness I have. But with God's help--through scriptures He brings to my mind, I don't have to let that happen. Praise Him. He is so faithful and true and unswervingly kind.

Having the wisdom of the Word in our hearts and mind, will help us to instantaneously test every situation we find ourselves in in our daily life according to the Bible. Then, having built great spiritual strength on the Rock, we are able to resist all evil that is thrown our way and live with the true joy in our hearts that comes through righteous living.

Every time I memorize a verse, I have to confess all sin and lift my thoughts from everything earthly; I empty myself of all self many times as I keep memorizing the verse. I do it in the mornings when my mind is fresh and there is little distraction. What an experience it is, it builds me so much.

I've been memorizing scripture for about 7 years now and what it has done for me is that I'm able to know God's will in almost every situation. the Lord brings to my remembrance the very scriptures i need to guide me in making judgment calls and giving me strength to endure trials as well as guide me in bible study by making connections with other scriptures without having to look them up . I need to know God; He is incomprehensible to me. Reading, comparing scripture to scripture, and committing his words to memory are helping me to see Christ and thus God more clearly. Today I learned that God doesn't send plaques or death; He simply separates himself from the sins we do, turns his back on us (Isaiah 59:2 and Deuteronomy 31:16, 17 ) and we receive the wage that sin pays (Romans 6:23).

This is beautifully written and stated...I have a co-worker and we have been having great conversations about God. I asked him if he would like a book on history and he said yes. So I gave him The Great Controversy and he has been reading it. Please keep Chris in your prayers for the Holy Spirit to open his heart and mind.

Memorizing Scripture is transforming my prayer life. I remember a time in my life when the thought of praying more than ten minutes in one sitting seemed impossible.
but now memorizing Scripture helps me to pray and have a tool to ask for God's promise.

I also have that problem, but it doesn't stop me from memorizing! One of GOD's promises is that HE will bring it back to our remembrance John 14:26 through the aid of the Holy Spirit. GOD CANNOT LIE! Titus 1:2 And I believe HIM and HIS WORD. Psalms 37:5 says Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in HIM, and HE will bring it to pass. Isaiah 65:24 says " It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; And while they are still speaking, I WILL HEAR."And finally Jeremiah 32:27 says "Behold! I AM THE LORD, THE GOD OF ALL FLESH! IS THERE ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR ME? I rely on HIS promises, but if I don't committ them to memory the HOLY SPIRIT cannot bring them back to my memory.

Amen!!! He brings back what we put there, even when it seems that our putting it there is futile!! Trust His word!!! I remember quoting a scripture, not remembering when I read it or where, only to read it later on, wondering, "When did I read this before? How did I quote it to the man in that situation?" GOD did it!! Just do your part, and He will do His!!!

Hey my friend, I only met one other person who had a worse memory than me and that was my mom. I would forget what I'm saying in mid sentence, misplace random objects and loose them quickly, I wasn't good at remember conversations I had but here's a promise to cling onto.
Proverbs 10:7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
When you begin to live your life right, and study the Bible more the Holy Spirit is able to renew your mind. He begins to work upon your mental powers and enables you to remember the things you used to not be able to.
Don't forget if you don't read your Bible you won't remember it. God won't bring to your remembrance something if it was never there in the first place.
