Apparently some of those people heard the initial explosion. They had time to look up and see the whole top of that mountain simply disintegrating there. Then there were the rivers of living death flowing swiftly down the side of the mountain. They had time to turn and start running, but before they could escape they were overtaken by it and buried there to be dug up by later generations.
